Wings To Fly - Flight Experience FAQ
Is your Flight Experience is coming soon? You may have some questions about what to expect and how the event is structured
Q: What is Wings to Fly or a Flight Experience with WBAA?
A program that provides a one-on-one flight experience for each child. The flight is approximately 30-45 minutes and takes place around the Madison-area with a chance to see familiar sights and, if the child is comfortable, some brief hands-on experience operating the aircraft. The format is very similar to the EAA Young Eagles program, which has been utilized by EAA Members around the world since 1992.
Q: How are your pilots chosen?
The Wings To Fly program and other WBAA flight experiences (see this short video) have been developed by current and former Airline pilots who are also active Flight Instructors. The pilots chosen to fly our Aviators are all volunteers who have been specifically chosen because they are current Flight Instructors or experienced pilots. All of our volunteers are fully licensed and have been chosen because they specifically like giving rides to kids, and have the skills to make the flight a positive experience. All of our pilots have hundreds or thousands of hours.
Q: What aircraft are used? Are they safe?
The aircraft that are used for these flight are two and four-seat piston-powered aircraft. Depending on which volunteer pilots are available, some of them use their own aircraft or rent from an airport business like Morey Airplane Company at Middleton Municipal Airport. Whether one is an aircraft owner or renter, the aircraft are required to have periodic inspections and maintenance. Part of our vetting process is choosing pilots who adhere to the regulations and pursue a safety mindset in their aircraft operations.
Q: How do you manage Safety? Do we still fly if the weather is 'bad'?
Each WBAA Flight Event begins with a full safety briefing that includes all operating participants covering ground and flight operations. Weather conditions, aircraft and pilot limitations, and more are discussed. Modifications are made if needed. Safety is the primary deciding factor if flight operations will proceed that day. That is followed by the personal limitations each pilot places on themselves. No pressure is applied to complete a flight. If a flight cannot be completed that day, a make-up day is scheduled as soon as practicable.
Q: Do you have insurance coverage? Why am I signing a waiver?
WBAA carries liability insurance for all of its programs, including its Flight Operations. The liability waiver you have been asked to sign is to inform you of the possible risks of this activity.
